THE TRUCKS
Country Wave
Edmonton based band The Trucks played to a packed house in the Country Roads Saloon recently. This group certainly
'entertains' and doesn't look or sound like most of the 'bar bands' that hit the circuit in their spare time. The
Trucks (also known as Free Spirit when backing Laura Vinson) is a multi-talented group of musicians with Dave Martineau
on lead and steel guitars, brother Paul Martineau on drums, Charlotte Weibe on keyboards, flute, accordion and
bass guitar) and Fred LaRose on stand-up bass. Needless to say the dual-purpose band has had a busy summer season
of the folk festival circuit.
CAPITOL RECORDS SHOWCASE
Country Wave
Backed by Edmonton's The Trucks, Sharon Anderson performed a set which included material from her debut album along
with new songs that will be on her next album. It was dissapointing for Sharon as the audience was sparse but those
of us who were there were well entertained. The Trucks (also known in some circles as Free Spirit, when working
with Laura Vinson) were in rare form. Fred LaRose as front man for the band is not only an accomplished musician
playing electric and stand up bass guitars, but is a 'wild and crazy guy' who sets the pace for fellow band members
Dave Marineau on lead, acoustic and pedal steel, Paul Martineau on drums, and Charlotte (Chuck) Wiebe as keyboardist
and accordionist. When I asked how long Charlotte had been with the group, I was told "Chuck has been a Truck"
since June. Charlotte was formerly a member of the Edmonton based rock group, Jenson Intercepter.
